FA Cup Replays

It’s like we can’t stop hearing about the FA Cup competition. The new season of football’s oldest competition became more intense this year with the involvement of Premier League sides in the third round.

What has made the noise of the competition a regular feature this year is the series of games that have been replayed. Every round of game, since the first in November, has featured games that ended in draws and had to be replayed, according to the competition rules.

The last round, which is the fourth, is no different. Of the 16 games that were played, only 10 produced winners after 90 minutes. Before the Fifth Round of games, these six games have to be replayed, as their opponents await them in the Round of 16.

Four of the last five games between both sides has ended in a draw, with only one ending in a goalless draw.

  1. Liverpool vs. Shrewsbury

Though high flying in the Premier League, the Reds let a two-goal lead slip as they were forced to a 2-2 draw. With this return leg set to be played at the Anfield Stadium, Liverpool certainly have the upper hand as they’re on an unbeaten home run, in all competitions.

  1. Cardiff City vs. Reading

On the last day of January, both sides met in an EFL Championship game. The game ended in a 1-1 draw. This was the same outcome of their 4th Round FA Cup fixture on the 25th of January, the same one that now needs a replay at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Derby have scored the first goal in six of their last games, with Northampton scoring first in four of their last five clashes. However, Derby have to find a way past a side that has not lost a game in their last nine, keeping a clean sheet in three.

  1. Birmingham City vs. Coventry City

The home team haven’t lost in their last six games. The away side in this fixture are on a 10-game unbeaten run. Another thing both sides have in common is the low-scoring trend in their games. 10 of the last 14 games (combined) both sides have played has seen less than two goals scored in them.

  1. Tottenham vs. Southampton

The all-Premier League tie that finished 1-1 at St. Mary’s Park. Jose Mourinho’s men will have the privilege of playing in front of their home fans this time around as they look to progress to the next round.
