The AFC Champions League has been ongoing for months now.
First was the qualifiers and then the competition proper that began sometime in March.
At the moment, we have eight teams in the running as the quarter-final games are being played.
Al Nassar, Al Sadd, Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad FC, Shanghai SIPG, Urawa, Guangzhou Evergrande, and Kashima are currently participating in the quarter-final games.
At this point, the weak are being weeded from the strong. We cannot say who will play at the semi-finals yet since the second leg games haven’t been played.
But from their performances so far, here are some of the teams to look out for:
-
Al-Nassr
Al-Nassr have performed well this season starting from the group stage where they finished second in their group.
So, out of the nine games, they have played so far, they have won five, lost two and two ended in a draw.
This semifinal game with Al-Sadd finished with a win for them.
They have met twice before the semi-final games this season. Out of the two games, one ended in a draw and Al-Nassr won the second.
Coupled with first leg win of the semi-final games, Al-Nassr has two wins to their name in their meetings with Al-Sadd.
-
Shanghai SIPG
It’s not been so much a smooth ride for Shanghai SIPG.
In the group stage, they finished with just two wins of the six games they played. Three ended in a draw and they lost one.
Their journey through the Knockout stages have been almost the same. Their round of 16 games ended with a draw and a win.
It’s been a season of draws for them. But somehow, they have been able to make enough wins to push them further this season.
We are still expecting the second leg of their game with Urawa. Urawa is just a win ahead of them this season.
Their next game will tell who goes to the semi-finals.
-
Al-Ittihad FC
Al-Ittihad also finished second in the group.
They finished with three wins out of the six games they played in the group stage. Two games ended in a draw and one in a loss.
In the knockout stages, they have won two games and their last game with Al-Hilal ended in a goalless draw.
Both teams have played 26 games. Al-Hilal have won 10 games, while Al-Ittihad won just six and the remaining 10 ended in a draw.
If history has anything to say, Al-Hilal might have a winning edge. Only the outcome of the game can tell.
Who do you think that will be?
