The La Liga Title is definitely going to Madrid this season. Atletico & Real Madrid are just 2 points apart with only one game left in the League. On Saturday, one of them will be crowned Champions of Spain.
For 15 minutes last Sunday, Real Madrid found themselves top of the League and were coasting away. Atletico were behind against Osasuna while Real Madrid were ahead against Bilbao. Atletico later scored 2 goals in 8 minutes to beat Osasuna and regain their lead at the top. The drama that ensued in the second half of matches on Sunday highlighted the delicate nature of La Liga this season. Barcelona’s loss against Celta means the 3 horse race for the La Liga Title has now become a 2 horse race. With only 2 points separating them, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid have no room for error.
ATLETICO & MADRID’S SEASON SO FAR
Atleti have had a very eventful season. They snapped up Luis Suarez just days after Barcelona shoved the Uruguayan out of the club. It was a smart move as Suarez has led them to the verge of the League Title scoring vital goals. The club however lost Thomas Partey to Arsenal on the last day of the transfer window. Simeone’s men embarked on a winning spree that saw them spear ahead of their rivals. By January, Atletico Madrid were 13 points clear of anyone.
Winning a League Title however requires maximum concentration. Atleti lost that concentration in February and allowed their rivals back in the Title race. Just 2 weeks ago, they were in danger of losing their position at the top. Fortunately for them, their rivals were just as bad. Barcelona failed to beat Atletico when presented the chance. Real Madrid failed to beat Sevilla as well when they could have gone top. These results meant Atletico are still well placed for their 11th La Liga Title. They must beat Real Valladolid in their last game however to be certain.
REAL MADRID’S SEASON SO FAR
While Barcelona then dropped more points against Granada, Levante and Celta, Real Madrid have stayed close. Los Blancos have had an eventful season in their own rights. Zidane’s team has been ravaged by injuries and covid infections all season. Real Madrid have had to deal with more than 60 injuries this season alone. At a point, their entire first choice backline were all unavailable for selection. They have also been without their captain Sergio Ramos for much of the season.
Madrid have however been able to mount a late rally and are still in the hunt for their 35th La Liga Title. They also have a superior head-to-head advantage over Atletico this season. That means if Atletico fail to beat Real Valladolid & Madrid beat Villarreal, Madrid are Champions. Ironically, Real Madrid legend Ronaldo Nazario is Real Valladolid’s president. Atletico Madrid will be wary of that.
