The month of August has been one of the most amazing months for sports lovers. And the reason is not far-fetched. It was a month that made sure there were no dull moments for sports fans. From Formula One to Football, Tennis to the IAAF World Championships in London, it’s been non-stop action in the world of sports.
Maybe that’s what has made the month seem so long. There was always one sporting event or the other to see, anticipate or look forward to. As we say our goodbyes to the month of August and usher in the month of September, let’s take a look at some of the memories – in the form of stats – that sports gave us in the month of August.
- Formula One: Lewis Hamilton’s Special Win
The past weekend saw another F1 race take place in Belgium. Of course it was all about Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel. In the end, the Englishman won the race, emphasizing the fact that there has been no back-to-back winner in this year’s Formula 1 season.
But there was something special about this one.
Hamilton’s victory came on his 200th Grand Prix start, making the Briton to become just the 17th driver in history to rack up two centuries of races at the highest level. He also equaled Michael Schumacher’s pole position record on Saturday before going on to record his 58th win overall.
- Football: The World Record Transfer Fee
It had been coming for a while. It was tagged several names by several people. Some thought it was impossible to pull off. “No club will be crazy enough to pay that much,” some others said. Even some of his team mates suggested he would stay.
The month of August saw PSG pull off the most impossible move of the summer transfer window (till date) by signing Neymar from Barcelona for a world record fee of €222m. The Financial Fair Play rules couldn’t stop this move. Barcelona could not prevent it from going through.
The world of football produced the most expensive football player in the month of August, 2017.
- Boxing: Floyd Mayweather’s 50-0
Probably the most anticipated boxing fight of the year – that’s overlooking the clash between Anthony Joshua and Vladimir Klitchsko. The boxing world – represented by Floyd Mayweather – and the MMA world – ably represented by Conor McGregor – clashed inside a boxing ring.
The fight was the first of its kind and it saw Mayweather maintain his unbeaten record by beating the Irishman. Even though both men finished off the day a windfall of cash – which made Conor speculatively richer than Cristiano Ronaldo – the most amazing number was Floyd’s 50-0 record he set on the night.
After setting the record, he announced he won’t be boxing again. This means that he not only eclipsed Rocky Marciano’s record, he also went through his professional boxing career without losing a single game.

That tweet tells the tale of Arsenal nightmare-afternoon at Anfield. Any team having a bad day would usually be able to at least muster something against the opponents. That was not to be for Arsene Wenger’s men. And that unwanted stat will go down in history as one to not be forgotten in a hurry.
