After waiting for quite the while – and enduring those “minor tennis tournaments” – the first Grand Slam of the year is here! No, we do not have anything against those tourneys in China and in Dubai and all.
But you see, there’s something about a Grand Slam. It’s the one tournament the tennis players spend the other tourneys preparing for. It is the big, fat deal; an unmissable one for any tennis player. They’re always looking forward to it.
As the Australian Open gets set to start on the 15th of January, with the world watching, you should be looking forward to it too. And here are some reasons why:
Mouth-Watering Clashes
If you’re one of those who love tennis but have missed seeing the greats in action, this is an ample opportunity to witness history in the making.
Although names like Andy Murray, Kei Nishikori, Victoria Azarenka and Serena Williams are on the long roll-call of players set to miss out on this one, there’s a long list of tennis greats (both young and old) gearing up to swing their racquets, win set after set and lay their hands on the first major title of the year.
Although the big games may not come early on in the tournament, be sure they’ll start rolling in once the boys and girls are separated from the men and the women.
The Upsets
While Roger Federer will be trying to defend the title he won last year, the WTA will definitely be crowning a new champion.
With the men’s and women’s winners set to pocket a $4-million (£2.32m) cheque – which is up from £2.14m in 2017, you can expect that there will be a lot of upsets in this tournament as players battle for this prize money.
But which names do you think will not be able to make it past the first three rounds?

Names to Watch Out For
Yes, some renowned names are already out of the competition. But, there are still some major names set to fire things up in Australia over the course of the next two weeks.
In the Men’s category, we have the likes of Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal, both of whom will be favorites to end up in the final. But with Andy Murray returning and the likes of Marin Cilic and Stan Wawrinka all competing, expect fireworks.
In the Women’s category, the Queen is absent. So you can expect a “royal rumble” between the likes of Simona Halep (1), Caroline Wozniacki (2), Venus Williams (5), Garbine Muguruza (3) and the rest of the over 50 women who will be fighting for the first title of the year.
All is set for the first major slam of the year. Are you ready? Which player – male and female – will you be cheering on to victory? Will you be putting your money on any names? If yes, which of these names have earned your love?
