When it comes to football in Europe, it’s the top five leagues and then the others. The Premier League, Spanish La Liga, German Bundesliga, Italian Serie A and the French Ligue 1 all feature the very best football players in the world. The recent Ballon d’Or rankings showcased this first hand.
With each of these five leagues also featuring the best football clubs in the world, the question of which football club is the best in Europe is one that often comes up in football discourses.
It’s a relative question however, with each person having different opinions about one club or the other, especially if it’s the club they’re a fan of or a rival football club. But then again, with the way the current football season in Europe has played out, which club is the best in Europe at the moment?
Based on Stats
It’s near impossible to tear football and numbers apart. Goals scored, attempts, ball possession and all help us to understand the game better and probably take advantage of games with seemingly obvious stats.
Using stats in the argument, we can say that Manchester City, Inter Milan, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid (the Unbeaten Ones) are the front-runners when it comes to deciding which team is the best in Europe at the moment.
These teams have shown title-winning credentials this season and it may not be long before we see them lifting their domestic titles come May next year.
Based on the Players in the Team
Just recently, Cristiano Ronaldo bagged his fifth Ballon d’Or award. This was after breaking yet another Champions League record with Real Madrid and before he scored twice in their game against Sevilla.
The rankings also featured the likes of Luka Modric (5th), Sergio Ramos (6th), and Isco (12th). Does this make Real Madrid the best team in Europe at the moment?
What about other clubs?
Manchester City currently has three of its players in the top ten region of the Premier League’s goal scorers’ chart. Is this enough to say they’re the best in England, talk more of the whole European continent?
This is a question that can be answered in many different ways, depending on which angle you’re looking at things from. Remember that there are some other leagues in Europe apart from these top five leagues.
Could it be that there’s a certain team in, say the English Championship or the Serie B, which at the moment can compete with the big shots we’re all familiar with? Could it be that we’ve been so overwhelmed with the top five leagues that we automatically feel like as if that’s where the best team in Europe at the moment should be?
If asked now, what would your response to this question be? Which club will you pick as the best football club in Europe at the moment? Will you be a bit biased to your favorite club or will you be unbiased in your decision? Leave us a comment and let us talk more football.
