2020 has been an eventful year for football. In the same year, football paused, resumed and moved at a pace that had managers and players worried. And of course, there was the little issue of COVID-19 to content with intermittently.
But the pace will only pick up speed in 2021. And the reason is simple: football leagues are trying to catch up on loss time. That’s why a league like the German Bundesliga will be resuming activities earlier than expected.
If you’re planning to kick off your 2021 in grand style, here are some Bundesliga games you can choose from this weekend.
-
Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Bayer Leverkusen
Leverkusen’s unbeaten run in the league came to an abrupt end at the hands of Bayern Munich. Losing their last game of the year, Peter Bosz’s side will be looking to start off their 2021 campaign with a win. Against Frankfurt, they have an opponent that usually gives them a tough time.

Since 2017, Leverkusen have failed to defeat Frankfurt away from home. In their last two attempts, they lost, by a 5-1 aggregate margin.

Werder Bremen vs. Union Berlin
Both sides have only won one of their last five games each. One would be quick to think they have goalscoring issues. But the reverse is the case.
Union Berlin have scored two goals in each of their last three games. In fact, they have scored a goal in every of their last 10 games. Only once, in their last 10 games, did Werder Bremen fail to score a goal in their game.

Both sides may have endured a losing streak in the past. Up against each other in this game however, they will be looking to score the goals that will help them start 2021 on a winning note.
3. Arminia Bielefeld vs. Borussia Moenchengladbach
Gladbach have managed themselves on all fronts this season. Eighth in the league, advancing from the UCL group stages and progressing in the DFB Pokal has seen them enjoy the latter days of 2020.
And they look set to pick things up from where they left it off when they take on Bielefeld. Having won 10 of their last 16 games against their Round 14 opponents, they’re favorites to pick up maximum points from this clash again.

Hertha Berlin vs. Schalke 04
Hertha have only won three games in the Bundesliga this season. But they’re way better than a Schalke side that has yet to register their first win of the season.
Rooted to the bottom of the table, the Royal Blues have become sitting targets for Bundesliga teams to aim at. They have conceded the first goal in eight of their last nine games and have managed to concede a goal in their last 16.
Although Hertha Berlin are without a win in their last three, they will be looking to boost their morale in this clash, and further pile on the misery for Schalke 04.
