Manchester City moved back to the top of the Premier League temporary this week. A 2-0 win over Everton ensured that the Citizens are now top, albeit temporarily.
The title race has been fierce this season. The Reds, at some point during the season, have shown strong intent to snatch the title from Manchester City. However, they have dropped 4 out of a possible 6 points in their last two games, revealing how tough the Premier League truly is.
The same can be said for Chelsea too.
Although they’re not exactly in the title race, theirs is a battle for what looks like the only available slot in the top four. And they have Arsenal and a resurgent Manchester United side to contend with. For them, every game is one that must be won.
It’s clear both Manchester City and Chelsea have so much riding on this Super Sunday clash.

For Manchester City, a win is necessary to keep the pressure on Liverpool and also stay poised to take advantage of any slip-up by the Reds. Each extra point gained going forward will be a big plus for Chelsea.
The history between both sides has been fairly balanced in recent times. In the last eight games both sides have played, both sides have shared the spoils. Pep Guardiola’s side has won four while the London Blues have also won four.
You’d have to go back to 2015 for the last time both sides played out a 1-1 draw when they met. Although the circumstance surrounding this game makes it exciting to look forward to, history makes it even more interesting.
What could influence this game more directly is the result of the last meeting between both sides. Earlier this season, Chelsea became the first side to inflict defeat on Manchester City. A 2-0 win for the Blues at the Stanford Bridge is one of the reasons why City is still chasing the PL top spot today.
It may be minute, but that loss to Chelsea may prove to be a psychological factor that determines which way this tie will swing. The Citizens’ home record is enviable. They have won the past six games, scoring over 25 goals in those games.

Despite City’s recent home dominance, they’ll be approaching this one with extreme caution. While they want to bang in all the goals up front, they will also be wary of conceding goals which may set them back in their bid to retain their league title.
It’s hard to tell which team goes into this game with the upper hand. For one, there’s every possibility that the result of the last meeting between both sides could repeat itself. And then again, City’s rampant home form could be the order of the day.
