Can Lyon Stop PSG’s Winning Run?

PSG's Winning Run

PSG's Winning Run

It’s been an exciting season in the French Ligue 1 this season. Teams that started the season like a house on fire (e.g., Stade Rennais) have now sunk to lower depth. The usual suspects like Lille are pretty much hanging around the top of the table.

The top table, dominated by PSG, will be the target of a side like Lyon when they face the Paris Boys in Paris this weekend.

Separated by just two points, this game is arguably the biggest in the French Ligue 1 this weekend. And there are more than enough reasons to look out for this game.

PSG may look like they picked up their fine form, after managing a five-game unbeaten run. However, losing three in their last 13 league games – one loss in their last five – says a lot about Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Having scored 13 goals in their last four games, they’re perfectly poised to get the better of a Lyon side that is dangerously close to them. Form aside, Rudi Garcia’s men are their regular customers.

Lyon have not managed a clean sheet against PSG in their last 19 attempts. This is one of the reasons why they have only won three of their 17 games against PSG. While Rudi Garcia is looking for his first victory against Thomas Tuchel after five attempts, Lyon will be searching for their first victory over PSG since 2019.

Lyon have only lost once in the French Ligue 1 this season. They’re however two points behind PSG on the log no thanks to the five draws that they have failed to convert to wins. Garcia’s men have not lost any of their last 10 games, a run which includes games against Lille and Monaco.

They climb to the top of the league with a win in this game. But, Lyon have been notorious for receiving cautions from the referees in the form of cards this season. With 30 yellow cards and four red cards received, they average three cards per game. Combined with PSG’s 27 yellow cards and five red cards this season, fans might be in for a festival of cards, instead of goals.

It’s much tighter at the top of the Ligue 1 this season than before. And this is one game that will determine what the top of the table will look like as the busy December period continues.
