March 04, 2020 Leave a Comment

The quarter-finals of this year’s Copa del Rey produced some shocking results.

Real Sociedad defeated Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao knocked Barcelona out of the competition. It is the first time in over a decade that these two clubs will not feature in the semi-final or final of the competition.

This week, the competition will continue from where it stopped, with all four teams playing the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final clash.

In the first game, Mirandes take on Real Sociedad. The host come into this game with a 2-1 deficit after losing the first leg. It’s the first time since the 2011/2012 season that they have made this far in the competition. In that year, they conceded eight goals over both legs.

The Segunda Division side have enjoyed an amazing Copa del Rey season so far. Aside beating Sevilla 3-1, they’ve also been responsible for the elimination of Villarreal and Celta Vigo, all La Liga sides. Talk about giant killers.

Real Sociedad have scored nine in their last three Copa del Rey games.

Real Sociedad have not been goal-shy this season. Having scored at least two goals in the last five Copa del Rey games they have played this season, they’ll be looking to finish things off this time around.

In the other semi-final clash, Athletic Bilbao travel to face Granada.

After their 3-3 clash against Tenerife in the Round of 16, Athletic Bilbao have won their two game since, with a 1-0 margin. Their master-class performance against Barcelona and their first-leg win over Granada makes them favorites going into this game.

Asides firing blanks in their last game, they have failed to score in three of their last five games. They have also been unable to keep a clean sheet in four of those last five games.

Compare their recent record to that of Athletic Bilbao. Bilbao have scored in four of their last five games, keeping a clean sheet in two of those games.

Both Mirandes and Granada have two things in common:

  • They’re playing at home
  • And they start off the second-leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final game with a deficit
