derby weekend

The football action which took center-stage in February spills over into this new month.

In this month of March, a lot of sporting events will take place. A lot of football leagues will resume and there’ll be plenty of action in the NBA.

F1 resumes too.

However, March kicks off in the most amazing fashion, as the first weekend of the month features various derbies in Europe’s top 5 leagues in Europe. We’ve tagged it the “Derby Weekend,” as three derbies will be played.

Let’s take a look at these derbies:

  1. Merseyside Derby

Jurgen Klopp’s men go into this derby on the back of their goalless draw against Manchester United. They’re just one point ahead of Manchester City and the title race has intensified. The Reds go into this game knowing that every point counts.

Can Liverpool win this game to maintain their lead over Manchester City at the top of the league?

They also know that their fate of winning a first Premier League title is firmly in their hand. Being a derby, bragging right is at stake.

And Everton, having suffered so long story the hands of the Reds, will be looking to win this one.

  1. North London Derby

Tottenham face Arsenal in the second North London derby of the Premier League season. For Spurs, this derby follows hot on the heels of the London derby against Chelsea, one which they lost to the Blues.

While Spurs failed to score in their last game, Arsenal scored five.

According to Pochettino, the title race may be over. However, there’s plenty to fight for with this game, including a top four finish. For both sides, a win could go a long way in securing that highly contested UCL spot.

  1. Rome Derby

Considered one of the fiercest in the world, both Roman outfits will battle it out, mostly for pride this weekend. Juventus seem to have wrapped up this year’s Serie A title. Second place looks like it’s Napoli to lose. Both Milan sides look set to also contest for a UCL spot.

Although it’s a home game for Lazio, their home record is not the best in Italy. They’ve only won three of the last 12 games played in the league. It’s the perfect time for AS Roma to continue their blistering goal-scoring form against their rivals.

Other games to be played this week include:

  • Real Madrid vs. Barcelona
  • Napoli vs. Juventus

However, it remains a derby weekend by all means. Rivalries will come alive again. It’s not going to be business as usual for all sides involved. Managers will change their strategies, players will be more aggressive and the fans will try to get the better of their rivals fans.

All is set for a weekend of derby games. Which team(s) are you backing? Gist us in the comments.
