It’s been a December to remember. It’s been a month of derbies in England, broken unbeaten streaks in Italy, PSG’s domination in France and the Bayern party in Germany. As for Spain, it’s the month that will feature the first El Clasico of the 2017/2018 La Liga season.

This weekend, Real Madrid will welcome Barcelona to the Santiago Bernabeu stadium where both teams will lock horns. 11 points currently separate both sides on the table and this game might just turn out to be a title decider, depending on which way it swings.

The season so far

Real Madrid had quite a terrible start to the campaign, drawing their first two games and losing to Real Betis in the fourth game week of the season. It was the perfect situation for Barcelona as they took advantage of their opponent’s poor luck and created a gap that has now run into double digits.

While Lionel Messi (14 Goals) and Luis Suarez (9 Goals) feature in the top ten of the league’s top scorers, you’ll have to look further down that list to find the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. The season has been that awkward for the Los Blancos.

Real Madrid has now won their last five home games in La Liga, keeping four clean sheets during that time, with Sevilla being their latest victim by a 5-0 margin.

The stats

Barcelona has not tasted defeat this season. They’ve won 13 games and drawn the remaining 3. For Real Madrid, they’ve already been beaten twice this season, with 9 wins and 4 draws to their name. While Real Madrid are unbeaten in 30 of their last 32 La Liga games at home, Barcelona have scored at least 2 goals in 21 of their last 23 La Liga games.

In the past six meetings between both sides, both teams scored in 5 of those six encounters, with 4 out of the 6 games ending in Over 2,5 goals.

The stats are pointing to the fact that there will be a lot of goals.

The El Clasico is not the only game you can look forward to this weekend.

In England, Arsenal faces Liverpool in the repeat of a game that saw 4 goals in the first half of the season. Everton takes on Chelsea while Manchester United and Leicester will lock horns.

While the French Ligue 1 and the German Bundesliga have gone on winter break, the Italian Serie A, just like the Premier League, continues to feature games. And there are some exciting games to look out for.

Juventus faces AS Roma while AC Milan welcomes Atalanta and then Napoli will face Sampdoria. Only four points separate the top four teams on the Serie A table and these games will decide whether or not there will be a new team topping the table after game week 18.
