Since the 31st of August, several European countries have been competing in the EuroBasket Championship currently ongoing in Finland, Israel, Romania and Turkey. 24 teams all set out on a mission to be crowned champion of European basketball.
With four groups of six countries each, the action began in earnest when countries like Slovenia and Russia kicked off their campaigns with wins whilst other countries like France and Israel both lost their opening games of the tournament.
Talking about how the teams qualified, Group A saw Slovenia finish unbeaten after registering wins over every other country in the group. The other teams that also qualified alongside the Slovenians were Finland, France and Greece.
In Group B, Lithuania led the qualifiers out of the group, followed by Germany Italy, Ukraine. Group C saw Spain finish the group stages unbeaten, qualifying alongside Croatia, Montenegro and Hungary. Serbia, Latvia, Russia and Turkey made up the teams that qualified out of Group D.
In terms of scoring points scored during the group stages, only Slovenia, France, Georgia, Croatia, and Belgium were able to manage 100+ points in some of their group stage games.
The knockout stages started off with 16 teams until they got whittled down to just two countries for the final: Slovenia vs. Serbia, two teams who some may say have surprised all in the tournament so far with their displays.

Speaking of the team to conquer European basketball, let’s look at how the finalists have fared since the tournament began. The Slovenians have not tasted defeat since the competition began. After beating the reigning European champions in the semi-finals, they kind of cemented their position as a side hungry for the EuroBasketball championship trophy.
Serbia on the other hand, has only lost once in the tournament, a defeat which came in the group stages at the hands of the Russians. Since then, they’ve not looked back as they’re currently on a run of 6-game winning streak.
Slovenia has averaged 90 PPG throughout the tournament while the Serbians have an average of 82 PPG. Will the total match points be more than 164.5? Will Slovenia outscore their opponents to clinch the championship? We will have to wait till Sunday to find out.
Same Sunday will feature the third-place game between Spain and Russia. After failing to defend the title they won the last time the EuroBasketball tournament was played, Spain will be looking to at least finish the tournament with a medal.
