After Nico Rosberg won the Formula One driver’s title last year and walked away from the sport, the world started to suggest the name that would become the next champion.
Of course only one name was on the lips of most: Lewis Hamilton. Who better to have a stroll in 2017 than the driver who almost won the title the year before?
Yes, there were other names that were thought could give him a run for his money, Sebastian Vettel topping the list. But, the Briton was generally thought to make light work of any opposition.
8 races into the 2017 season, Lewis Hamilton failed to make a podium-finish thrice (Russia (4), Monaco (7) and most recently coming 5th in Azerbaijan). So far so good, he has only had 3 wins, and 5 podium-finishes, a stat fairly similar to Sebastian Vettel’s 3 wins and 6 podium-finishes.
But, as things stand, Vettel is currently leading the standings with 153 points and is closely followed by Lewis Hamilton who is in second position with 139 points. As you would expect, it’s been a straight face-off between the German and British drivers.
As if to make the rivalry seem even more obvious, emotions spilled over onto the race tracks in Azerbaijan as tempers flared. Hamilton and Vettel got involved in an incident that saw the latter accuse the former of brake-checking him. He (Vettel) then expressed his frustration by ramming Hamilton’s Mercedes.
In the end, both men finished outside the top three on the day – Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo won the race and, as expected, took a gulp of champagne…from his boots! With both parties pointing accusing fingers in both directions, a war of words ensued.
As the dust settles on this incident and we look forward to the next race in Australia (watch out for it on NairaBET!), all eyes will remain on the first two names currently on the drivers’ standings.
After just missing out on the title last year, Hamilton will have his sights set on usurping a Vettel who also wants to be crowned champion.
With 12 more races to go, it’s safe to say, “The Formula 1 season is just about to get even more dramatic.” Grab a seat – some popcorn too – and enjoy the ride.
