Goals or Trophies: Which One Is More Important?

goals or trophies

When Ronaldo and Lionel Messi were busy stealing headlines with eye-popping number of goals scored in a calendar, the world concluded that both were gods.

How else do you describe the phenomenon of scoring 50+ goals in over six successive seasons? This was a feat achieved in 2016, a year in which Ronaldo won almost every trophy he competed for.

Fast-forward to 2017, and a surprise name joined the list of prolific goal scorers, a goal-scoring machine that made other strikers look like nothing. Harry Kane, on 23 December, equaled Alan Shearer’s record of 36 Premier League goals in a calendar year, having scored a hat-trick in a 0–3 away win at Burnley.

He then went on to surpass Shearer’s record in the following game with another hat-trick in the 5–2 home win against Southampton, ending the year with 39 Premier League goals. The last two goals allowed Kane to reach 56 goals for club and country combined in 2017.

No other player in Europe’s top five leagues this year scored that amount of goals. It was also the first time in the last seven years that a player outscored either Lionel Messi of Barcelona or Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid. It’s easy to say Harry Kane has joined a new league.

But, there are still so many questions, one of which is, Has Harry Kane outgrown Tottenham Hotspurs? One way or the other, this important question is also related to the title of this blog post. Here’s how.

Looking at the numbers mentioned above, it’s easy to imagine Harry Kane in a Real Madrid jersey. There’s nothing wrong with playing for a Premier League side. At least it is the most-watched league in the world, with all the cash to throw around.

But of what good is it to a player that scores that amount of goals and doesn’t win any trophies? For all the time that Messi and Ronaldo dominated the scoring charts, they had one trophy or the other to show for it, be it the UCL Champions League trophy, the FIFA World Club cup or something else.

But for all his efforts this year, what does Harry Kane have to show for all his goals scored? So much noise about how he beat the two football gods alive with his figures and then a Golden Boot. All these pale in comparison to the joy and fulfillment of winning a trophy.

Which brings us to the title of this blog post again: Which one is more important: Goals or Trophies? If you were in the shoes of Harry Kane now, would you be happy with these goals or would you be frustrated with the way your team has not reflected all your goal-scoring efforts by winning trophies?

Harry Kane may just become the most expensive player in the nearest future. He seems to have outgrown Spurs and may need a bigger stage to perform on. His trophy cabinet is missing major trophies, another major reason to make a major move soonest.

What do you think? Which one is more important: Goals or Trophies? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think.
