Milan Derby

Of all the Serie A games to be played this weekend, the biggest of them all is the clash between Inter Milan and AC Milan in the Milan derby. Asides being a game between two eternal rivals, this edition of the Derby della Madonnina is important to both sides, for a number of reasons.

Inter Milan have changed the landscape of the title race in Italy. What used to be a one-horse race for the Serie A title has now become two, with Juventus and Inter Milan front-runners this season. And Antonio Conte’s side, with just one loss this season and in second place, are keeping close tabs on Juventus.

Players to Look Out for

Asides remaining unbeaten in their last games, Inter Milan have scored the first goal in nine of their last nine matches. In these nine games, they won seven of the nine first halves, thereby underscoring their dominance. With 16 league goals, Romelu Lukaku would usually be one of the super-stars to look out for on the night.

However, all eyes will be centered on one player, Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Since leaving AC Milan in 2012, this is the first time the Swede will be taking on his former side in the Serie A. Although he has only once in his last four games for AC Milan, the big Swede will be looking to help AC Milan win this clash.

Head-to-Head

Both teams head into this clash unbeaten in their last five games. Judging by this, it’s easy to say this clash is too tight to call. However, the history between both sides says otherwise.

Inter Milan’s dominance in this contest is so obvious. The Nerazzurri have won three of their last four Milan derby games, and scored first in five of the last seven editions of this encounter. When playing as the home side, Inter Milan have only lost four times, in their last 20 match-ups.

AC Milan have failed to win any of their last eight Milan derby games in regular time.

After ending their 2019 with a 5-0 defeat to Atalanta, AC Milan have started off the new year with an amazing run. Of the right games they have played this year, the Rossonerri have not lost once. Theirs is also similar to Inter’s nine-game unbeaten run which started after their 1-2 loss to Barcelona in the Champions League.

To continue their fine form this year, AC Milan have to find a way past the best defense in the league, a side that has only conceded 18 goals in 22 games. For Milan, they need to win this game in order to push for an European spot on the table. For Inter Milan, they need to win to ensure Juventus is kept in check.
