The Italian Open, which started this week, will come to an end this weekend. It may not be a grand slam, but the Italian Open features quite a number of A-list tennis players.
For most of them, this tournament is a way to get ready for the French Open (Roland Garros) set to start later this month.
The past few days have been eventful in the competition and as we wait for the finals (both the ATP and the WTA) on Sunday, we take a look at which tennis player is out and which tennis player still stands a chance of winning the Italian Open.
WTA
The Women’s singles category of the Italian Open has seen some surprising results (as usual) and some of the usual suspects staying their course to reach the final.
Simona Halep, seeded No. 1 for this tournament, is very much in the competition no thanks to how she has dismissed some major names in the competition like Osaka, Caroline Garcia and Madison Keys. She’s yet to drop a set
Maria Sharapova has taken no prisoners so far in the tourney. Before eliminating Jelena Ostapenko, she had survived 3 games, winning 6 sets and losing 2. She looks set on appearing in the final…
Both women have met 8 times, with Sharapova winning 7 times.

The surprise package of this category is Anett Kontaveit. The 22 year-old Estonian, who is right-handed, is ranked 26th in the singles rankings.
She has played five rounds of tennis games at the Italian Open so far this week and has won all, without dropping a set. She has defeated Venus Williams (8th) and Caroline Wozniacki (2nd).
ATP
Alexander Zverev has continued from where he stopped at the Madrid Masters after defeating D. Goffin in his quarter-final game yesterday. It was the first time the German will drop a set in the Italian Open.
He’s set to face Cilic in the semi-final today.
Being clay court season, Rafa Nadal has naturally made it this far. Just like Zverev, he has played three games and has dropped only one set (against Fabio Fognini). He has qualified for the semi-final but will have to find a way past one of his familiar foes in Novak Djokovic.
The Serbian, who seems to have found new energy ahead of the French Open, eliminated the likes of Kei Nishikori, Dolgopolov from the Italian Open. After four tennis games played, he has only dropped a single set.
This will be the 51st meeting between Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic, with Djokovic winning more times (26) than Nadal (24).
