It’s the beginning of yet another week and the last day in July. Unlike other months in a calendar year, the month of July is not exactly associated with plenty of sporting activities.
But this July has been a different one. From the International Champions Cup in China & the U.S, to The Open in Scotland, the sports world rarely witnessed a dull moment this month. Looking back, we relive some of the sporting moments that either kept us on the edge of our seats or had us leaping for joy.
- Wimbledon
Wimbledon 2017, although characterized by injuries to several top-ranking players, was still one tournament that the history of Tennis won’t be forgetting in a hurry.
Roger Federer and Venus Williams proved to the world that the legends still have their head in the game as they went all the way to the final. How Federer made it through a tennis Grand Slam without dropping a single set is still baffling – stuff of legends, right?
It’s such pity Venus couldn’t clinch the title after such great season — not like Garbine Muguruza didn’t deserve the win anyway.
Who can forget this year’s Manic Monday – the day that saw the exit of at least four top-10-ranked players?
- Formula 1
The F1 race saw three different races – in Austria, Great Britain and Hungary – that produced three different winners. Although the drama in Azerbaijan still tops the list, the mild drama in Great Britain comes close too.
Sebastian Vettel led – at the time – Lewis Hamilton with 20 points on the drivers’ standings. After the race in Great Britain, Hamilton was able to cut the lead to just one point thanks to home advantage and Vettel’s tyres bursting in the penultimate lap.
Although the German increased his lead to 14 points with victory in Hungary, F1 this month has been unpredictable; an unpredictability that has left us with unforgettable sporting moments.
- Pre-Season Friendlies
From debut goals – Wayne Rooney, Lacazette, Lukaku, Calhanoglu – to solo runs – Asensio – and crazy scorelines – Arsenal vs. Benfica, PSG vs. Tottenham – it’s been an eventful season of pre-season friendlies in the world of football.
- Summer Transfer Window
The Lukaku-Morata comparisons that rocked social media added up to the exciting moments football served us this month. Then there was the mild issue of crazy transfer fees, players wanting out by all means, and yes, PSG pipping Monaco to the first trophy of the 2017/2018 French football season, thanks to a certain Dani Alves.
- The FINA World Championships
It’s one of the few sporting events where you’ll see swimmers gathered in one city to battle things out in different sports like swimming, diving and more.
This year’s edition of the championship saw names like Adam Peaty – the European, Commonwealth, world, and Olympic champion in the 100m breaststroke – break his own championship record once and his own world record, TWICE!
Katie Ledecky – who once set and then broke again a World Record time, in one day – finished the championship with five gold medals and one silver.
6. #MayweatherMcGregor
#MayweatherMcGregor, the surprising announcement of a legendary boxer agreeing to fight a Mixed Martial Arts fighter, with all the drama that followed — the world press tours and battle of words, and…the money involved — definitely added to the fun sporting moments of July.
Eventful July, right? Sure thing! Now we can’t wait for all the sporting action in August.
Bye July. Hello August.
