It’s not the best of times for Juventus in Italian football. After what seemed like a resurrection in their form, at the beginning of the year, they lost the Derby d’Italia. With that 2-0 loss to Inter Milan, they are now 10 points behind the league leaders, AC Milan.
Winning a 10th league title in a row may be difficult this season. The same also applies to the Champions League trophy and, to an extent, the Coppa Italia. One trophy that may help them to avoid finishing this season trophyless is the Italian Supercoppa.
But Gennaro Gattuso’s Napoli stands between the Old Lady and the trophy.
This Italian Supercoppa final is the latest twist in the Juventus-Napoli episode that we have already had this season. Remember when Juventus were awarded the points after Napoli failed to show up at their Serie A game? That decision was rescinded and the game has been rescheduled.
Both sides are now scheduled to meet at least three times before the season ends.

Although they have lost three of their last 10, what makes Napoli really dangerous is their goalscoring form. Only twice in that run of games did they fail to score a goal. Up against a Juventus side that has only managed two clean sheets in their last 10 games, the boys from Naples will fancy their chances in this game.
The last time both sides met in a cup competition, the game ended goalless. That was the only draw that has been recorded between both sides in their last 17 meetings.

While former teammates – Andrea Pirlo and Gattuso – lock horns, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lorenzo Insigne will be looking to outscore each other. The two players have scored the most goals for their respective sides in the league this season.
And their managers will be counting on their goals to help them lay their hands on the trophy – a first in their managerial careers.

Extra time and penalties cannot be ruled out in this one. But both teams will be looking to avoid an extended game as that will mean more minutes to be played in what is already a very hectic season.
