La Liga resumes

Year 2019 ended with the first of the 19/20 La Liga season. As we start off a new season, it’s also the beginning of the end in Spain’s premier club football competition. Starting this weekend, the winter break will be over as action will resume in various football centers across Spain.

After 18 games played in the league, only two points separate Barcelona and Real Madrid at the top of the table. Closely followed in third and fourth place respectively are Sevilla and Atletico Madrid while the likes of Celta Vigo, Leganes and Espanyol wallow in relegation waters.

As the league resumes this weekend, which games will be played?

  1. Espanyol vs. Barcelona

It’s the Catalan derby in Spain this weekend. It’s 20th versus the first-place team in La Liga. It’s almost a no-contest between both sides. However, derbies games in football are one of the hardest events to predict.

For Barcelona, they’ve only lost twice away from home this season. In their last five La Liga games away from home, they’ve scored an average of two goals per game. They face an Espanyol side that has conceded an average of two goals per game in their last four games in all competitions.

Espanyol have only defeated Barcelona twice in their last 10 competitions.

For Villarreal, they have failed to keep a clean sheet in four of their last five away games in the league. As a result, they’ve lost six of their last 10 league games, winning the remaining four with no draws.

  1. Sevilla vs. Athletic Bilbao

Athetic Bilbao, seventh on the log, boast the second-best defense in the league. Conceding just 12 goals in 18 games, theirs is second only to Atletico Madrid’s defense. They’re up against a Sevilla side that have lost just once in their last five La Liga games.
