4 – 4: Can Nigeria Bounce Back in Their Next AFCON Qualifiers?

November 16, 2020 Leave a Comment

AFCON Qualifiers

Morocco, Cameroon, and Nigeria. These were the only sides that managed to score four goals in Round 3 of the AFCON qualifiers. Both lions (Atlas Lions of Morocco and the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon), ripped their opponents apart. But the Super Eagles of Nigeria were unable to fly.

While most teams were enjoying strong home advantage, a disastrous second-half performance saw Nigeria surrender a 4-1 lead against Sierra Leone. Conceding three goals in the last 20 minutes of the game led to an unlikely result between both sides. Nigeria still top the table, despite the loss. With two teams set to qualify out of the group, there is no serious danger here.

What’s at stake now is bouncing back from the draw as they travel to Sierra Leone to face their Group L opponents again. Nigeria remains one of the unbeaten sides left in the qualifying series. However, they are the only unbeaten side that has conceded seven goals so far – an average of two per game.

That is a serious concern for any side heading into a major tournament like the AFCON. It could also affect the remainder of their qualifying series as some key players have suffered injuries.

Eight goals were scored the last time Nigeria and Sierra Leone faced off.

This week features the last few days of the last international break of the year. In the AFCON qualifiers, many teams can secure their qualification for the biggest football festival on the continent.

After playing and winning all four games, conceding just once, Senegal have now qualified for the next African Cup of Nations.

Only one away win was recorded in the third round of AFCON qualifiers. Will the dominance of the home sides continue this week or will the away teams enjoy victory also?

The reigning champions of African football, Algeria, can also secure qualification this week. Just like Senegal, they have won all their games so far. The same can also be said about Ghana, one of the only two sides yet to concede a goal in the AFCON qualifiers so far.

Only two of the first 24 AFCON qualifying games finished without a goal. No team has scored more goals in the series than Nigeria (10) while no team has conceded more than Eswatini and Libya (nine goals). You can expect that the goals will continue to pour in later this week.

Which of the remaining AFCON qualifiers will see both sides score?

It’s the continuation of what has been a busy schedule for most of these players. It’s also the continuation of a journey to a tournament that has now been postponed but will still be played. Which teams and players are you backing to get wins and goals in the last round of AFCON qualifiers? Can Nigeria bounce back from that shock draw?
