Opening Round of CAF Champions League Games

On Friday, the group stages of the new CAF Champions League season will kick off. Just under three months after Al Ahly of Egypt were crowned champions of Africa, that throne is up for grabs yet again.

16 teams, split into four different groups, will begin their quest to conquer African football. And with the caliber of teams involved this season, there’s a lot to be excited about. The games will, no doubt, produce fireworks, for the fans, and will also be an avenue for folks like you to cash in on the beautiful game.

While Nigerian sides will be wondering what they need to do to get a CAF Champions League spot, other sides like Zamalek of Egypt will be plotting how to get maximum points against MC Alger of Algeria.

For the Egyptians, they have not lost any of the four games they have played at home this season. With the Algerians winning two of their last five away games this year, they will have their work cut out for them.

Seven of the combined last 10 games these two sides have played produced less than three goals each.

One of the games of the first round has to be the clash between Wydad Casablanca and Kaizer Chiefs. The Moroccans made it to the semi-finals of the campaign last year and will be hoping to start their CAF Champions League season on a winning note.

After a shock loss to Richards Bay in the Nedbank Cup, the South Africans now have to find a way to redeem themselves. Traveling up North, they will take on a side that has won four of its last five home games, with their only loss coming against the reigning champions Al Ahly.

Speaking of Al Ahly, Pitso Mosimane’s side will play their first game of new season after fulfilling their FIFA Club World Cup commitments in Qatar. The Egyptians will be hoping to repeat their feat in the group stages last season when they only lost once.

Away from the North African sides, TP Mazembe will also be in action when they welcome Belouizdad. Although unbeaten in their last five, the Algerians will find their hosts to be one tough nut to crack, no thanks to their solid home form which has now been running since last year October.

Will there be away wins in the opening round of games or will the home advantage be the order of the day?

The DR Congo side is currently on a five-game winning streak, unbeaten in their last seven which has seen them keep four clean sheets. Defensive records like this, however, have a way of crumbling, especially on a grand stage like in the CAF Champions League.
