PL Countdown: What Are Your Predictions for the First MatchDay?

August 08, 2018 Leave a Comment

After waiting for what seemed like forever, a new Premier League season is upon us!

This weekend will feature the first MatchDay of the 2018/2019 Premier League season. Fans will, this weekend, get the opportunity to see 10 of the 380 games to be played this season.

Every other league will take a back-seat to accommodate the almighty Premier League. But who will be facing who on MatchDay 1?

  1. Manchester United vs. Leicester

The Red Devils start their campaign against the Foxes. Priced at odds of 1.50 to win the game, Jose Mourinho will be looking to start the campaign on a winning note, especially with the return of some of the players who went far at the World Cup.

With Man. Utd unbeaten in 34 of their last 36 home matches in the league, do you think Leicester can spring a surprise win?

  1. Newcastle vs. Tottenham

Tottenham, as of the time of writing this post, is the only PL side yet to sign any player in the summer transfer window. It will be interesting to see how they will set up against a Newcastle side that will want to finish at least in the top half of the table.

  1. Watford vs. Brighton

No more Richarlison for Watford as they start their campaign against one of the three clubs that retain their PL status last season.

  1. Bournemouth vs. Cardiff

Niel Warnock’s Cardiff City starts life in the Premier League with a visit to Eddie Howe’s men. Bournemouth is priced at 1.90 to win this game while Cardiff to win stands at 4.35 odds.

There have been over 2,5 goals scored in 17 of Bournemouth’s last 21 Premier League games.

  1. Fulham vs. Crystal Palace

Another newly-promoted club starts their campaign against a side that finished in the bottom half of the table last season. And there’s plenty of history between both clubs.

Both teams scored in 5 of the last 6 meetings between both sides, with Over 2,5 goals being scored in four of those games.

  1. Huddersfield vs. Chelsea

The Blues will be hoping that names like Morata will hit the ground running in their opening game. They will also be hoping for a repeat of the scoreline last season where they won the game 3-1.

  1. Wolves vs. Everton

This one is not a fixture popular for large number of goals being scored. In the past six meetings between both sides, two games ended in 0-0 draws. Both sides made major signings during the transfer window and it’ll be interesting to see how this “Portuguese affair” will go.

  1. Southampton vs. Burnley

The season gets even more hectic for Sean Dyche’s men as they add Premier League to their qualification for Europa League football. Playing the Thursday before their opening game means the game could go either ways.

The Saints could notch a win and Burnley could start the season with a win.
Is there any chance that both teams could draw this game?

  1. Liverpool vs. West Ham

Two big spenders from the summer transfer window go head-to-head on the opening weekend. Liverpool did not lose a Premier League game at home last season and they will want to continue that streak. The Hammers, under Pellegrini, won’t mind upsetting the odds and stealing all three points.

  1. Arsenal vs. Manchester City

Just one quick fact is enough to describe this game. In the last three meetings between both sides, Arsenal only managed to score one goal, with Manchester City scoring 9 – an average of 3 in each game. But the Gunners have a new manager. Can the Gunners re-write this terrible history?
