Bayern Munich’s win over Bayer Leverkusen in the DFB Pokal final drew the curtain on club football in Germany.
Well, most of it.
The Bavarians may have sealed their 13th domestic double. However, there’s still the little case of two teams fighting for a chance to play top-flight football.
On Thursday, the first leg of the German Bundesliga’s Promotion/Relegation Play-offs was played. But Werder Bremen and 1. FC. Heidenheim, the two teams involved, could only manage a scoreless draw. And this score line makes the second leg, to be played on Monday, a do-or-die affair for both sides.
A win for Werder Bremen will see them retain their status in the Bundesliga. They will continue playing top-flight football, at the expense of their opponent. On the other hand, Heidenheim finished third in the 2. Bundesliga. Although they missed out on automatic promotion by just three points, they can still play top-flight football next season, if they defeat Werder Bremen in the play-off fixture on Monday.
To make things interesting, Heidenheim have never played in the top flight while Werder Bremen have only been relegated once.
Two of those games have finished with both sides scoring.

Unlike in Germany, the football season is far from over in England.
Liverpool may have won the league. But there’s still plenty to fight for in the race for the top four. In addition to that, there’s the race for survival. And that’s just the Premier League.
England’s top-flight football and its second-tier league, the English Championship, were the two leagues in the country that were not cancelled. Others, including the League 1, were ended because of the pandemic.

While the top two teams in League 1 gained automatic promotion, the third team to be promoted will be decided by a play-off. The play-offs which started last week, will see the second leg of the semi-finals played this week.
In the first leg, Wycombe Wanderers put four goals past Fleetwood Town while Portsmouth could only manage a 1-1 draw against Oxford United.
