Relegation debate

10 games into the 2020/2021 Premier League season and it’s already like a season like no other. Teams like Everton, Southampton, Leicester, Tottenham, and Chelsea have occupied the top spot at some point in this season already.

The blame game is on as to why the five-sub rule was voted against. The injury list is getting bigger. And the chances of teams trying to survive relegation is getting slimmer – if recent results are anything to go by.

In a normal Premier League season, it’s too early to talk about relegation. But this season has been anything but normal. That’s why Sheffield United, a side that finished in ninth last season, have not won any of their first 10 games of the season.

Burnley finished in 10th last season, with 15 wins. Now, they’ve only managed one so far. Newly-promoted Fulham and West Brom, with one win each, have conceded the most goals in the league so far, 18.

Which of these four teams do you think will win their MatchDay 11 games?

Those four teams are the contenders for the relegation fight this season. Early days, yes. However, they’ve started the season so poorly… and the downward spiral seems to keep going on.

Burnley and Sheffield United have scored four goals each. West Brom’s seven goals so far puts them two short of the nine Fulham have managed.

A football season is like a marathon race, not a sprint. You never know when or where a team will turn the corner and improve their form. A team that starts off their season poorly, especially in an unpredictable sport like football, can bounce back and survive.

However, that can only be done if you can keep the team healthy and fit for the journey. But how many teams are doing that this season? Some players have barely played all games this season no thanks to their packed schedule.

That’s an argument for sides that have Champions League commitments. For these four sides, they’re mostly playing just once a week. Yet, they still have injury demons that they have to fight every now and then.

Up next for Burnley is Everton. Up next for Sheffield is Leicester City.
Although both sides will be at home, will they be able to pick up maximum points in their race for survival?

The journey ahead is still very long, with over 25 games still to be played. For sure, anything can still happen. However, will any of these four teams be able to turn things around in their favor? Will they be playing Premier League football next season?

Of these four sides, which of them do you think will get relegated this season? Drop your comments below and join the conversation.
