Rb Leipzig vs. Borussia Dortmund

RB Leipzig is the only team hanging anywhere around Bayern Munich on the Bundesliga table. Just three points behind the Bavarians, the young side have only lost once in their last 14 league games.

If they’re to stand any chance of upsetting the Bavarians in this title race, they have to keep winning games. More importantly, they have to take points off sides like Borussia Dortmund, a potential title contender too.

Dortmund have not particularly a stellar season so far. Although they have conceded three goals less than Bayern have let in, they have lost five league games already. To climb up the table, they need to win this clash against RB Leipzig.

It may be a mid-season fixture. There’s a lot at stake however, for both sides involved in this clash.

In this second-versus-fourth clash, Dortmund have it all to do against the side with the best defense in the league. Julian Nagelsmann’s side have only conceded nine goals this season. Since conceding three goals at the hands of Bayern Munich in the first week of December, they have gone four league games without conceding.

Make that five if you add their DFP Pokal encounter against Augsburg.

It’s now nine games without suffering a loss. And you can bet that they will be looking to add more games to that unbeaten run.

None of RB Leipzig’s last five games have seen both sides score.

With three losses in their last 10 – in all competitions – and a change of manager somewhere in the mix, Dortmund head into this fixture as the outsiders. Keeping a clean sheet in their last two games was the first time they managed a such run since the end of October. All but two of their last 10 games of 2020 finished with both teams finding the back of the net.

Up against a Leipzig side that has scored 25 goals this season, Dortmund have a lot of work on their hands.

However, the Black and Yellow team can also count on their 28 league goals this season – an average of two per game. Another thing they can bank on in this game is their record against Leipzig.

Borussia Dortmund have not lost any of their last five games against RB Leipzig. You’ll have to go as far back as 2017 to find the last time Leipzig won a game against Dortmund. 2016 was the last time they managed to keep Dortmund at bay.

Five editions of this fixture later, the best Leipzig have managed has been a draw.

It’s form versus history in this battle to be Germany’s second best (considering that Bayern are the best side in the league). Which team will come out on top this weekend? Drop your comments below and join the conversation.
