Road to the EFL Cup Final: Review, Trends and Tips

January 22, 2018 Leave a Comment

The EFL Cup presents teams the first shot at glory in what has been quite a long football season. With final set to be played in February, winning it will be a big boost for any team whose players can outplay every other team and win it.

We have just four more teams battling it out in the second leg of the competition including Manchester City, Bristol City, Arsenal and Chelsea.

The first leg of the semi-finals saw Manchester City enjoy a narrow 2-1 lead over Bristol while Arsenal and Chelsea played out a drab draw. As we look forward to the return leg of those fixtures, here are some things to look out for:

  1. Bristol City vs. Manchester City

Pep Guardiola’s men bounced back from their Liverpool defeat with a win over Newcastle. They travel away to face a side with nothing to lose and history of kicking out a handful of Premier League teams from the EFL Cup. The away goal too may prove to be a banana peel for the Citizens.

But it should be noted that Man. City ‘s last two EFL Cup games before their first leg encounter against Bristol City both ended in a penalty shootout.

  1. Arsenal Chelsea

Both teams don’t have a chance to win the Premier League title. So, the EFL Cup is one of the trophies they will both be looking to add to their trophy cabinet before the season ends.

In the first leg of the encounter, both sides failed to find the back of the net. Although a 0-0 draw gives Chelsea some sort of advantage going to the Emirates on Wednesday…

This game may end in a draw and go on to penalties.

The last four times Chelsea played Arsenal away from the Stamford Bridge, two goals or more were scored in each of those games. It is the first time that Chelsea is playing away from home in the EFL Cup this season.

Will there be a lot of goals in this match?

Chelsea, without Pedro and Morata, hit four during the weekend. Arsenal did the same too, without Alexis Sanchez, in their game against Crystal Palace. Which of these two teams will be heading to the final after Wednesday? Will Manchester City be able to progress too?
