Russia 2017: who makes it to the knockout stages

Russia is generally known for its cold temperature. But things are heating up already in the “home of onion-shaped domes”.

The second round of group games in the Confederations Cup is done and dusted. And each match has provided football fans the world over with more than enough to talk about.

First it was the Portuguese getting one over the Russians, with C. Ronaldo opening his goal-scoring account in the tournament. Then Mexico had to come from behind to record a 2-1 win over New Zealand; a win which had action both on the field of play and also on the sidelines, with fierce tackles and exchange of swear words a feature on the day.

As if that wasn’t enough action, the Australians somehow managed a 1-1 draw against the Lions of Cameroon, who will be imagining what could have been if more of those 19 shots had been converted. Round 2 was then wrapped up with an electric performance from the Chileans and the young German squad.

Phew! So much action that we’re still trying to catch our breath.

With New Zealand out of the picture, and Portugal almost assured of qualification, Mexico and Russia will battle it out for a qualification ticket. Which of these two teams do you think deserves to remain in the competition?

As things stand now, the competition has reached its business end. Of course there’s one more round of group games to go but this final round will determine who goes home and who continues to the knockout stages.

After this third and final round, the boys will be separated from the men.

In Group A, Mexico and Portugal top the standings with 4 points. Russia has 3 while New Zealand hasn’t recorded any points. In Group B, Chile and Germany both have 4 points while Cameroon and Australia have just 1 point each.

With qualification at stake, the final round of group games is set to feature even more explosive action. Mexico take on Russia while Portugal will fancy their chances of finishing top of the group when they take on New Zealand.

The other group will see Germany take on Cameroon while Chile and Australia will slug it out with qualification still possible for all teams involved.

All games in Group B except one has ended with both teams scoring. With qualification still possible for all, do you think this goal-scoring trend will continue?

It seems the excitement is just about to get started in Russia. While we look forward to seeing how things will pan out, which team for you has been the most amazing to watch in the tournament so far:

  • The lightning fast Cameroonians?
  • The young Germans?
  • The Socceroos?
  • The star-studded Chileans?
  • The sleek Mexicans
  • Ronaldo, B. Silva and co?
  • The home team?
  • The hard-balling All Whites?
