sporting events for August

Welcome to yet another month in a year that’s gradually coming to an end. Though the year may be coming to an end, sport fans are gearing up for a major month of sporting action.

Can’t blame them, especially the football fans. The past two months have been “quiet.” No major football games – Confederations Cup doesn’t count – only transfer news and pre-season friendlies. It’s been the same in the world of basketball too!

But all that’s about to change this month. The weekends are about to spring more into life as new football seasons begin. Welcome to August, the month of all kinds of sporting action. Here are some to look out for:

  1. Premier League

A new PL season kicks off in the second week of August (Friday, 11th). Although the pre-season has given us a hint of what to expect, the Premier League is notorious for being unpredictable. Watch out for those new signings, new coaches and the various tactical changes.

  1. La Liga

This new month also features La Liga, a.k.a. two-horse-race league, which kicks off much later in the month. While the thought of seeing Real Madrid and Barcelona run other teams over isn’t so exciting, the joy of seeing the football gods – Messi and C. Ronaldo – mesmerize fans is worth anticipating.

  1. Serie A

No doubt the world was caught by surprise as AC Milan went on a shopping spree. Now the world will be keeping an eye on their performances, which means there’ll be some sort of spotlight on the Serie A, which kicks off this month.

  1. Bundesliga

A league that saw RB Leipzig qualify for the UEFA Champions League last term is worthy of mention in this list. Yes, it’s a league that has only two clubs: Bayern Munich and the rest. But the Bundesliga still serves up its own drama too and we can’t wait!

  1. Ligue 1

Monaco has been raided – maybe not totally, PSG is still chasing after players and Balotelli is still very much around. It’s the French Ligue 1. With PSG winning the Tropheé des Champions last week, the journey to the 2017/2018 Ligue 1 title starts this weekend.

  1. UEFA Super Cup

Another Real Madrid vs. Manchester United clash… But this time, one of Europe’s most overlooked trophies is at stake: the Super Cup. Both squads are expected to be at full strength when this game comes around on the 8th of August. Looking forward to Lukaku vs. Ramos, Modric vs. Pogba? We are too!

  1. The Community Shield

This weekend, Arsenal takes on Chelsea in the Premier season opener. The last time these two played each other, the Gunners were the victorious ones, winning the FA Cup.

This time it may just be a shield or a piece of tin at stake. But with Conte, Wenger and Arsenal involved, and bragging rights at stake, you can expect fireworks this weekend when these two titans clash in the Community Shield.

  1. Spanish Super Cup

The thought of the precursor for the 17/18 La Liga season being an El Clasico clash is mouth-watering enough. Barcelona already drew first blood in the United States during the International Champions Cup.

But this one is different; a Super Cup that will see both teams, over two legs, contest for a kind of bragging right that will last well into the season – or at least until the next El Clasico is played.

  1. UEFA Draws

The draws for the group stages of both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League will take place on the 24th of this month. But that will be after the play-offs – which starts on the 15th – have been played.

  1. German Super Cup

If it’s a game between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, it has to appear on this kind of list. If the German Super Cup is at stake in that kind of game, that’s even more reason to include it here. Asides the manager change by Dortmund, the absence of Lahm and Xabi Alonso, it’s the same old set of teams from the last season.

How about the four other sports?

  1. #MayweatherMcGregor

On the 26th of August, two worlds will clash inside a boxing ring. Save the date, ladies and gentlemen, as it will be a fight to remember. Floyd Mayweather, a boxer, and Conor McGregor, a mixed martial arts fighter, will trade blows to the amusement of the watching world. It will be the biggest event boxing has seen this year since Anthony Joshua and Klitchsko shared the same ring.

  1. Formula One

The race experience will resume from its four-week hiatus in the last weekend in August. Belgium is next on the calendar, and only two names will be on everybody’s lips: Vettel, Hamilton!

  1. The U.S. Open

This month features the last tennis Grand Slam of the year, the U.S Open. It’s unfortunate that names like Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic are already out of the tournament. But with the way Roland Garros and Wimbledon played out, we look forward to an exciting tournament.

  1. EuroBasket 2017

Featuring countries like Spain, Serbia, Lithuania and France, amongst others, this year’s EuroBasket which kicks off this month is another sporting event to look out for.

The basketball tournament which will be hosted by four countries – Israel, Romania, Finland and Turkey – will feature four groups containing 6 teams each. The four best teams after the group-stage round then advance to a single-elimination knockout stage.

There’s more than enough sporting activities to keep you busy – and keep you earning – this month of August. We welcome you into the month of more than enough sporting action.

Cheers!
