It’s one cup competition in Spain to another as the Spanish Super Cup enjoys the spotlight this week.
The four-team format competition, which took a new dimension last year, was played in Saudi Arabia. But the plans for the tournament this year have changed with the pandemic a major factor. Instead of travelling to the East, the four teams involved will play their football in Spain.
The weather has not helped matters much in Spain. And it’s also one of the reasons why Real Madrid may field a fatigued team in their clash against Athletic Bilbao. Since playing out a 0-0 draw at Osasuna, Zinedine Zidane’s men have been stranded for almost three days due to a storm.
Athletic Bilbao, whose La Liga game against Atletico Madrid was postponed, have not played a game since the third of January. When they face Real Madrid, they will be hoping to be match ready and also defeat the current holders of the Spanish Super Cup.

In the last 18 meetings between both sides, Athletic Bilbao have only won once. This fixture, largely dominated by Real Madrid, doesn’t usually feature a lot of goals. Only two of the last seven meetings between both sides featured at least three goals.
In the other semi-final fixture of the Spanish Super Cup, it’s a resurgent Barcelona side up against Real Sociedad.
The Catalan giants, after a rough patch of games, seem to have picked themselves up. Since their Champions League loss to Juventus, they have managed to go on an eight-game unbeaten run in the league.

Their 4-0 triumph against Granada was the fourth (in eight games) that they managed to keep a clean sheet.
Once high-flying, Real Sociedad have endured a torrid run of games recently. Since December, they have only managed one win, against Athletic Bilbao. That run of 10 games has seen them suffer defeat four times.

Now up against Barcelona, it’s their toughest game since the turn of the year. And with their record against the Catalans, they have plenty of work to do if they are to make it to the Spanish Super Cup final.
In the last 18 games between both sides, Real Sociedad have won just three times, as compared to the 12 wins registered by Barcelona.
