The Intercontinental Cup Begins

The Intercontinental Cup just began, and it seems like it will be the shortest football tournament we are going to experience this year.

Only four teams will be participating in the tournament this season, and these four teams were picked only from Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

The teams that will be playing this year are Syria, India, Tajikistan, and North Korea.

All four teams will be playing against one another in the Round Robin format. Then the top two teams will take on each at the final to decide the winner of the tournament.

Already the first round of games has been played. How do you think this season will turn out to be? Which of these teams has a chance at winning the title?

Let’s get familiar with each team in the tournament….

  1. Syria

Syria started this tournament with a win.

They faced Korea on the second day of the competition, and they got themselves three points after finishing with a 5-2 scoreline in their favor.

This is going to be the second win in their last five games.

It is not totally surprising that they are off to a winning start. They are the highest ranked team in the tournament.

They are 85th in the FIFA World Rankings.

  1. Tajikistan

Tajikistan also had a winning start in this tournament.

They won their game against India with a 4-2 scoreline.  Theirs was a comeback win. In the first half, India had a taken a 2-0 lead, but they were able to score four goals in the second half to secure a win.

On FIFA’s Ranking, they are number 120.  This made their win very surprising, especially since they won against India, the defending champions.

Their next game will be against Syria. It might not be an easy match for them. This will be their first win in the last five games they have played.

This is Tajikistan first win in their last five games.

3. India

India kick started this tournament on the wrong foot. Hopefully, they can clean up their records with great comebacks.

They lost their game to Tajikistan. Though they started well, they were not able to make it to the finish line with a win.

India is ranked no 101 in the FIFA World Ranking which makes them the second highest ranking team in the tournament.

4. North Korea

North Korea also suffered a defeat this season.

They are the least ranked in the FIFA World’s Ranking. Still, we expect a great performance from them in this tournament.

Hopefully, their next match against India will be a win for them.

This tournament is one you do not want to miss.
