It is definitely not the most-talked about FIFA competition. Yet, the U-20 Women’s World Cup, taking place in France, has, in the past few days, show-cased some of the best talents to watch out for in women football.
From large score margins (England 6 vs. Mexico 1), to Haiti making its debut in the competition and three of the tournament’s highest goal scorers having scored four goals each, it’s safe to say the competition has once again lived up to expectations.
The future is definitely bright for the 16 countries taking part in the tournament. For some of them, the shining has stopped has they’ve bowed out of the competition. But for some others – the four teams left in the running – it’ll be a big fight for a chance to be crowned the queens of football, albeit at this stage.
Among Spain, England, France and Japan, which of these four countries can go the distance and win the trophy?
-
France U20
They’re the host country. They have some sort of motivation from the national French team whose exploits at the FIFA World Cup helped them to win the trophy. And this may be the reason why they have not lost a game since the tournament began. Talk about home advantage.
In the group stages, they only conceded one goal, scoring 8 against the three teams they played against – Netherlands, Ghana and New Zealand. A lone goal was enough to see them through against Korea DPR.

Spain U20
Just like France, Spain did not lose any group game. But they scored less (7) and conceded more (3) than France during the group stages. Their quarter final win was a 2-1 defeat of Nigeria’s Falconets.
They can also boast of having one of the top scorers of the tournament so far in their ranks: Patricia Guijarro, who has gotten 4 goals for herself, four out of the nine goals Spain have scored in the tourney so far.
Will they be playing in the final or the third-place match after this semi-final game?

England U20
The English girls are the only survivors so far from Group B. They’re also the most rampant side in the tournament. Theirs is not a 100% record but they’re yet to lose a game, scored 10 goals in the group stage – an average of 3 per game – and followed it up with 2 against Netherlands in the quarters.
-
Japan U20
The surprise package of the semis, the Japanese team is the only team on this list that lost a game in the group stages. They didn’t even finish top of their group. That meant that they faced Germany in the quarter-finals, the only side that finished the group stages with 3 wins from 3.
Against all odds, they outscored the Germans and the rest is now history.
Can they go one further, appear in the final and even win it?
