The UEFA Champions League round of 16 continues this week. Four games were played last week. This week will also feature four games between some of the most popular football clubs in Europe.
First up is Chelsea vs. Barcelona, this Tuesday. Each time these two teams have clashed in Europe, it has always ended either with last-minute heart-breaking goals (Iniesta at the Stamford Bridge and Fernando Torres at the Nou Camp) or with terrible refereeing decisions.
And that’s why fans are anticipating this one. Barcelona, currently top of the La Liga, is undefeated in their last 7 Champions League games. In those seven games, the Catalan giants have kept a clean sheet 6 times.
While Barcelona scored 9 goals throughout their group stage campaign, Chelsea scored 16 goals, 10 of those goals coming at the Stamford Bridge. With an average of 3 goals per game at home and no loss at home in the UCL this season, this is definitely one to watch out for.
In the other game on Tuesday, Bayern Munich will host the Besiktas, the side that has been described as the “Turkish Chelsea.” In the group stages, Bayern won all their 3 home games and Besiktas won all of their away games.
Bayern Munich scored at least 2 goals in 6 of their last 7 Champions League games while Besiktas sailed through the group stages without tasting defeat. Both teams scored more than an average of 2 goals per game in the group stages of the competition.
On Wednesday, Seviilla face Manchester United. The last time both teams played against each other, Sevilla beat Manchester by 3 goals to 1. That was four years ago.
Sevilla has avoided defeat at home in the last 4 Champions League games they’ve played at home. In those four home games, they scored 10 times, conceding 6 goals. Manchester United, on the UCL road, won two of their last 3 games away from the Theatre of Dreams. They only conceded two goals in those 3 games.
Shakhtar Donetsk vs. AS Roma will wrap things up on Wednesday night. The two teams have met in the Champions League four times, with the Ukrainian side winning three out of those four games. None of those games ended in a draw.
In the group stages, Shakhtar won all of their home games, scoring an average of two goals per game. AS Roma, on the other hand, struggled away from home, registering just one win, one draw and one loss. They also managed to concede an average of two goals for every time they played away from home during those 3 games.
This is just the first of leg of these fixtures. But whatever happens in these games will decide how the second leg will play out.
