Even when a winner emerges from the US Open in New York, the headline may not be as big as the one the world witnessed on Sunday.
The Grand Slam had been going on as usual, with comeback wins and games that were won in straight sets.
As usual, until Novak Djokovic was disqualified from the competition. What was supposed to be a Round of 16 win for the Serbian turned out to be a win for Carreno-Busta. This, easily, is the biggest news from the first half of the tournament so far.
But the show must go on.

And all is now set for the 2nd – and more competitive – half of the Grand Slam tournament.
In the ATP…
Alexander Zverev was one of the first to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Of the men that remain,
- Daniil Medvedev, Matteo Berrettini and Andrey Rublev are yet to drop a set
- Two of Francis Tiafoe’s three games have required a fourth set
- Berrettini and Rublev have the most history between themselves, with five meetings, three of which the Italian has won
On the road to the final of this year’s US Open tournament, there’s plenty of action still yet to play out.
In the WTA…
The new week in the US Open Women’s Singles category will feature the remaining Round of 16 games and the journey to the final. And, all things being equal, more upsets are in order.
Angelique Kerber’s loss to a player ranked 18 places below her is just one of the upsets we’ve witnessed in the tournament so far. Ranked 35th in the world, Yulia Putintseva knocked out Petra, ranked 15th in the world.

But despite all the surprise losses, the likes of Serena Willams, and Naomi Osaka have remained in the running to win the competition. Dropping just one set, Serena has blown away all her opponents thus far.
Remember Victoria Azarenka? Her unbeaten run continues in this competition as she is yet to drop a set. Having been knocked out of the US Open Doubles category, she can now concentrate on going as far as possible in her quest for glory.
It’s the week for the superstars to step up to the plate and be make all their efforts in training pay off. The fight for points will be stiffer this week and only the best will make it to the finish line.
