There are only two MatchDays left before the 18/19 PL season is over. It’s been such a long season; one made longer by the title race and the battle for top four.
As the end of the season draws near, it’s the perfect time for awards to be dished out to the most outstanding players.
Just a few days ago some players were awarded PFA awards for their outstanding feats this season.
One of the award recipients was Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool.
The Dutch defender beat the likes of Saido Mane, Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling, amongst others, to win the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award.
Can Virgil van Dijk find a way to help Liverpool to some more clean sheets and more wins?

Van Dijk has played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s success this season.
After joining the Reds, he brought stability which was further underscored by Alisson’s feats in goal. Alongside being a rock for Liverpool’s defense, the Dutch defender also knows how to find his way up front.
Virgil Van Dijk has scored five goals and made two assists for Liverpool this season. It’s no wonder he became the first defender to be voted the league’s best player since John Terry won it in 2005.
No doubt, van Dijk has proven time without number that he is the number one defender in the league.
No arguments.
However, questions arise when we try to name him the best player in the league.
How is Virgil van Dijk the best player in a league season where
- Mohamed Salah, Saido Mane and Sergio Aguero have scored 20+ goals?
- Has the defender been more influential to the success of his side than teammates Robertson and Alexander Trent-Arnold?
- Compared to Raheem Sterling, who has been better?
It’s understandable that these award shortlists and their eventual winners can only have one winner. It’s also expected that the winner may not ‘necessarily’ deserve it in the end. All that been said, it takes us back to the question:
Is Virgil Van Dijk really the best player to have kicked a football in the 2018/2019 PL season?
It is agreed that he has been a phenomenal defender this season. However, has he been the most phenomenal player this season?
Chelsea fans will argue that Eden Hazard has had a better season. Manchester City fans will claim Raheem Sterling should have won the award. Maybe Manchester United fans may not join the conversation, but Liverpool fans can mention Mohamed Salah as a worthy winner too.
How about you? What do you think of Virgil van Dijk being the best player this season? Do you think he deserves the award? Is there a player who should have won the award instead of the Dutch defender?
