A couple of months back, it was one complaint or the other about not having enough sporting action to keep us occupied. Fans of one sport or the other – with the exception of fans of Formula 1, Cricket, Golf – murmured time and time when they had to consider how long it’ll take before major sporting seasons resumed.
The world of sports has swung into full gear and sports lovers got into a frenzy; keeping up with events is now hard work. From the Premier League to La Liga, Rugby action to events in the world of Tennis, it’s been non-stop action since the calendar turned to the month of August.
And as if to summarize what the month already looked like, this week features every other kind of sport that you can think about, making it one of the most exciting weeks ever this year, for sport fans of course. Let’s quickly tell you about some of the action you can look forward to seeing this week.
-
#MayweatherMcGregor
What better way to start than with the ‘money fight’?! After days of spars, exchange of words and a whole lot more, two worlds will collide on the 27th August (Nigerian time). A legendary boxer and a legendary MMA fighter will try to “outbox” each other while in the same ring.

Formula 1
The Formula 1 resumes from its break this coming weekend as the race to win the drivers’ title – and the constructors’ title too – continues in Belgium. For the umpteenth time, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel, among other drivers, will compete for not just podium finishes but maximum points to either catch up or cement their positions on the standings.
-
The Play-offs
The race to qualify for both the group stages of the UEFA Champions League and the Europa League continues this week. With the first leg of games done with, it’s “go big or go home” time. Clubs like Nice, Napoli, Liverpool, Celtic, AC Milan and Everton are all still in contention to make into the draws for this year’s Champions League/Europa League draws.
-
Rugby Championship
The four-country competition which started this past weekend will run till the month of October. Featuring six rounds, the second round of games will be played this weekend in different stadiums.
-
Liverpool vs. Arsenal
This is the star game of Gameweek 3 of the Premier League. With Liverpool set to play midweek while still missing Coutinho, fatigue may play an important role in this game. Coming off the back of a defeat at Stoke, the Gunners will be looking to at least get something out of Anfield. You can also keep an eye out for the game between Chelsea and Everton.

The French Golden Boy of Brazilian origins will again be in action this weekend as PSG takes on St. Etienne. After such a spectacular performance in Ligue 1 on Matchday 3 – scoring twice and providing two assists – you can expect that the world will be watching out for Neymar yet again this weekend.
