With just one more day to go this year, it’s the perfect time to reminisce on the happenings in the year.
2018 was a year in which every other month featured one sporting event or the other. We dare say every week in the year showcased one event or the other.
It was the ultimate year for sport fans and we take a look at some of those breathtaking events:
1. FIFA World Cup
It’s hard to pick out a specific game from all the 64 played at the World Cup in Russia this year.
There was Belgium’s win over Japan and South Korea’s surprise win over Germany. Then there was the final and also France’s win against Argentina.
We’ll have to wait another four years for the next one to come. But the one in Russia left us with enough memories to enjoy till Qatar comes.
2. NBA Playoff Finals
Playoff finals before this year’s edition had always been keenly contested. Each team would be evenly matched forcing the finals into Game 6 and even Game 7.
But that was not the case this year.
Steph Curry and the Warriors, against Cleveland Cavaliers, took a 4-0 best-of-seven series lead, to blow-out the Cavs. Some say it was one of the major factors that led to Lebron James becoming a Lakers player today.
3. Champions League final
Liverpool’s run to the final was a glorious one!
Against Real Madrid in the final, their front trio of Salah, Mane and Firmino made the Reds look like formidable opponents. But Jurgen Klopp’s side had an Achilles’ heel; their defense.
Two goalkeeping errors after, Klopp lost yet another final as a Liverpool manager. Of course, there’s the ever-green debate as to whether or not Sergio Ramos was intent on hurting Salah enough to have him injured.
The Special One had it long coming. It was something like a delayed gratification for United fans. And when he was gone, the news of Solksjaer’s appointment made it look like Christmas came early for the Red Devils.

Since then, Manchester United has banged in eight, conceded twice and now look like serious contenders for a Premier League title top four finish.
5. The Others
We know so much happened this year. And it’ll be almost impossible to analyze all. So we’ve chosen to cram all of them into one long list here.
Here we go!
- Luka Modric scooping all available international football awards
- The ‘twerk’ question
- Tiger Woods finally winning another title in Golf
- The U.S Open final drama
- Lewis Hamilton’s dominance
- Manchester City’s back-to-back losses in the league
