With just 8 matches to play in the Premier League this season, there’s nothing to separate Chelsea and West Ham. Both clubs sit 4th and 5th respectively on the Premier League table with 55 points each and are competing to make the Premier League top four. They face each other this weekend in a very anticipated London derby.
After the European Super League saga, attentions have returned to the race for the UEFA Champions League spots once again. With only four qualifying spots available in the League, competition has been as intense as ever. Manchester City and Manchester United have pulled apart from the rest of the League leaving just 2 spots left to vie for.
THEIR STORIES THIS SEASON
Ahead of their clash this weekend, both clubs have had very contrasting seasons. While West Ham are performing beyond expectations, Chelsea have been below par in the League. David Moyes has been sort of a miracle worker for West Ham this season. The Scottish manager has turned a side that narrowly avoided relegation last season into top four contenders. He also has players like Tomáš Souček and on loan forward Jessie Lingard to thank. They will be confident knowing they’ve won more matches than Chelsea this season.
Chelsea meanwhile were in danger of a tragic season under Frank Lampard till the timely intervention of owner Roman Abramovich. The Russian billionaire’s decision to sack the club legend and replace him with Thomas Tuchel was widely criticized but is turning out to be their turning point this season. Tuchel has completely transformed Chelsea so much, they’ve only lost lost once in 18 games under him. With Tuchel, Chelsea are right back in the mix to make the top 4. They’re also through to the FA Cup final and the semi-final of the Champions League. Mason Mount has been Chelsea’s standout star this season.
West Ham is currently 5th on the table, level on points with Chelsea, and only behind on goal difference. They’ve both failed to win their last matchmaking Saturday’s game even more important.
West Ham and Chelsea will go into this weekend’s game knowing that they have Liverpool, Tottenham, and Everton hot on their heels. They’re also only 1 point behind 3rd placed Leicester although they’ve played one game more. The top 4 race this season will definitely go down to the wire.
REMAINING PL FIXTURES
West Ham has a somewhat easier round of fixtures left. After playing Chelsea, West Ham will play Burnley, Everton, Brighton, West Brom, and Southampton. Chelsea meanwhile will have to play Fulham, Manchester City, Arsenal, Leicester, and Aston Villa.
With very little to separate West Ham and Chelsea this season, who do you think will make the top 4? We think West Ham will make the top 4 ahead of Chelsea.
