After so many injuries which led to a number of unfinished games, upsets everywhere, Manic Monday and almost two weeks of top-level tennis action, we’ve reached the climax of this year’s Wimbledon.
The grass has seen the men and women whittled down from 100+ competitors in the beginning to now just two in both events: Roger Federer and Marin Cilic in the Gentlemen’s category and Garbine Muguruza and Venus Williams in the Ladies’ category.
Now, it’s the final week of Wimbledon 2017 which will also feature the final of both categories.
In the Ladies’ category, 37-year old Venus Williams takes on 23-year old Garbine Muguruza. Without Serena in the competition, most wouldn’t have been able to predict that soon-to-be “Auntie Venus” would come this far in the tourney.
If you say she’s been the surprise package of the tournament, maybe you’re right. Riding on experience, she will be looking to win a title she hasn’t won since 2008.
Facing her on the other side of the court will be Muguruza, who won the 2016 edition of Roland Garros and was born a year before Venus turned pro.
The game is live as at posting this.
It’s safe to say that the Gentlemen’s Singles category witnessed more injures and unfinished games than in the Ladies’ category. This in a way took the shine off the category.
It helped produce another surprise finalist in Marin Cilic but didn’t stop Roger Federer from slicing his way to another grand slam final.
The 7-time Wimbledon winner who will be 36 next month will now be looking to add another Wimbledon title as he faces the 28-year old Cilic who has never won a Wimbledon title.
It may seem like a lopsided battle if you add the fact that Roger has failed to drop a single set so far in the tournament. But Cilic will be looking to use his aggressive style of play to clinch this one.
The stage is set for the grand finale? Who will be crowned champion? Have your say by leaving us a comment in the comments section below.
